Product Description

0.80±0.02 IV Low Acetaldehyde 1.0 ppm PET Resin for Pure Water Bottles

Problem

Bottled pure water sometimes develops a faint sweet or fruity off-note after a few weeks on the shelf, even when the water tested at the plant is fully compliant.

Retailers reject those lots, and consumers read the smell as contamination, which damages brand trust far beyond the value of a single shipment.

This matters most for large water brands, where a single off-taste complaint can trigger a retailer-wide recall and months of reputation repair. The cost of one rejected container far exceeds the price premium of a better grade.

Water is the largest-volume bottled beverage, so even a small reject rate becomes a large annual loss once it is multiplied across a season of production.

Cause

The off-note is acetaldehyde (AA), a volatile by-product formed when PET is overheated during drying, extrusion and injection molding.

Standard bottle resin may carry 2-4 ppm residual AA; above roughly 2 ppm the compound migrates into water and becomes detectable by trained tasters.

Excess heat also lowers intrinsic viscosity (IV), so thin water bottles lose top-load strength and deform at the base.

Two mechanisms act together: thermal degradation of the melt during processing, and migration of residual acetaldehyde from the bottle wall into the sealed water. Both scale with melt temperature and residence time.

Because the effect builds up gradually, the off-note often appears weeks after filling, long after the bottles have left the plant.

Solution

JADE 0.80±0.02 IV water grade resin is polymerized with an AA ceiling of ≤1.0 ppm, about 50-70% below standard bottle grades.

That low starting value leaves headroom for AA generated during processing, so the finished bottle stays below the taste threshold through shelf life.

The tight IV window of ±0.02 keeps wall thickness and molecular orientation stable batch to batch, so blow-molding settings need no constant retuning.

A controlled low-AA polymer blended with a tight IV profile keeps the finished bottle inside the taste specification even at peak output, so quality and throughput no longer pull against each other.

Producers can therefore run faster without adding a costly online taste check, because the resin itself carries the safety margin.

Selection Guide

  • Select 0.80 IV for still pure water bottles up to 2 L on standard stretch-blow lines.
  • For returnable 5-gallon bottles, step up to 0.84 IV to gain top-load margin.
  • If your injection unit runs hot (melt above 285°C), prioritize this low-AA grade even if the price is slightly higher.
  • Keep resin drying dew point at or below -40°C, as moisture drives both AA formation and IV loss.

Application Scenarios

  • Pure water and purified water bottles from 330 mL to 2 L.
  • Non-carbonated drinking water lines running above 12,000 bottles per hour.
  • Premium still-water brands that must pass blind taste panels.

FAQ

Does low acetaldehyde reduce bottle strength?
No. AA and IV are controlled independently, so IV 0.80±0.02 still delivers full wall strength and drop resistance.

What drying settings keep AA low?
Dry at 160-170°C with a dew point of -40°C or lower; pushing above 180°C rapidly raises process-generated AA.

Is the resin approved for food contact?
Yes, it complies with FDA and EU REACH requirements for drinking-water contact.

How long does taste neutrality last?
Under normal indoor storage, neutral taste is retained for 12 months and beyond.

IV Viscosity Differences & Bottle Type Matching

The main difference between the PET grades is the IV viscosity of PET, which decides the type of bottle each grade is used for:

Type IV Viscosity (dL/g) Bottle Type
CZ-302 0.800±0.015 Potable water bottle
CZ-302L 0.780±0.015 Potable water bottle (Min)
CZ-318 0.830±0.015 Oil / cosmetics bottle, APET sheet & roll
CZ-328 0.860±0.015 CSD bottle
CZ-328A 0.855±0.015 CSD bottle (fast reheat)
CZ-333 0.800±0.015 Hot fill bottle
CZ-328H 0.875±0.015 Gallon bottle

Low IV (0.780–0.800 dL/g) suits thin-wall still water and hot fill bottles; medium IV (0.830 dL/g) suits oil, cosmetics and APET sheet / roll; high IV (0.855–0.875 dL/g) builds the wall strength and stress-crack resistance needed by CSD, fast-reheat and gallon bottles.
