BOPET Film
>
Metallized polyester looks expensive when the base film is right and looks cheap when it is not. This 8 micron BOPET film is engineered for metallizing, with light transmission ≥88% and a smooth, defect-free surface that lets the aluminium deposit form a bright, uniform mirror layer at a lower coating weight.
Converters producing VMPET (metallized polyester) frequently see a dull, greyish appearance, pinholes, and uneven opacity across the web. The metallized layer grips inconsistently, so downstream ink or adhesive adhesion fails. To compensate, operators increase aluminium loading, which raises cost and can make the film brittle in the vacuum chamber.
The brightness of a metallized layer depends on the base film's surface smoothness and internal light transmission. Surface irregularities scatter the incoming aluminium vapour, producing a matte rather than bright finish and weakening adhesion. thin-gauge internal scattering from residual crystallites further reduces transmission, so less light passes and the film looks darker. Contamination or slip additive bloom on the surface creates nucleation defects that show as pinholes.
This film pairs a clean, low-additive core with a tightly controlled surface roughness in the 0.02-0.04 μm range, giving a consistent substrate for aluminium nucleation. Light transmission is held at ≥88%, so a thin, even coating reads bright. A controlled skin formulation keeps slip additives away from the metallizing surface, which improves aluminium adhesion to ≥2.0 N/15mm while maintaining windability.
Suited to metallized flexible packaging for snacks, confectionery and coffee, decorative and barrier films, and as a lamination web where a metallic look and moisture barrier are both required. Its uniformity also supports optical and reflective film applications.
when you need maximum yield and a bright metallized appearance. If the metallized film must survive aggressive downstream handling or high barrier is critical, consider 12 μm base for more robustness, or add a top coat to protect the aluminium layer.
